Android not asking which app to open with? How to get the menu back

Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus and other Android phones.

Android used to ask “Open with…” every time. Now it just opens one app, and you can't find a way to choose another. The menu hasn't gone; Android is skipping it because a default is set.

The three reasons the menu disappears

1. A default was chosen with “Always”

Once someone taps Always, that app becomes the default and the menu stops appearing.

Fix: Settings → Apps → [the app that opens] → Open by default (Samsung: Set as default) → Clear default preferences. Next time, the menu returns.

2. Only one app can open it

If only one installed app supports that file type, there's nothing to choose from, so Android opens it directly.

Fix: install another app that supports the type. You can check how many apps support each type in Defaultify.

3. It's a verified app link

Since Android 12, links to websites that have verified their app (YouTube, Instagram, Amazon and many more) open in that app automatically, with no menu.

Fix: Settings → Apps → [the app] → Open by default → turn off Open supported links. See links opening in an app instead of the browser.

A quick way to choose just once

Many file managers and some apps have a Share or Open with option in their own menu (often under ⋮). That lets you pick an app for one file without changing the default.

Know which defaults are set before they surprise you

Defaultify for Android shows every role, file type and link handler with its current default, so you can see why the menu is skipped and fix it in a couple of taps.
