Android keeps opening files in the wrong app? How to fix it
Every PDF opens in Google Drive. Every video opens in a gallery app you never use. You never deliberately chose these, so why does Android insist?
Why it happens
- You (or someone) tapped “Always” once. The “Open with” dialog has Just once and Always buttons. One tap on Always and Android stops asking, for good.
- An app was installed with the phone. Phone makers often pre-install viewers that are set as defaults out of the box.
- Only one app could open it. If just one installed app supports a file type, Android opens it without asking.
Fix it in 3 steps
- Find the app that keeps opening the file. Open the file and note which app appears.
- Clear its defaults. Go to Settings → Apps → [that app] → Open by default (Samsung: Set as default) and tap Clear default preferences (or Clear defaults).
- Choose again. Open the file. When Open with appears, pick the right app and tap Always.
Heads up: clearing removes all of that app's defaults
Android can't clear just one file type. If Google Drive opened both your PDFs and your Office files, clearing it resets both. Defaultify shows which types an app has claimed before you clear it, so you know what you'll need to re-pick.
If the wrong app keeps coming back
- Check you cleared the right app. Some file managers hand files to another app. Clear defaults on the app that actually shows the file.
- Look for duplicate apps. Phones often have two gallery apps or two PDF viewers (the manufacturer's and Google's).
- Watch for app updates. Installing or updating an app that handles the same file type can reset your choice. Defaultify's change alerts tell you when that happens.
- Last resort: reset all app preferences. It clears every default at once, but also other settings.
Fix it from one screen
Defaultify for Android shows which app opens each file type, flags conflicts in its health score, and takes you straight to the right setting to change it.
