How to change your default browser on Mac

Works on macOS Ventura and later, including Sonoma, Sequoia and Tahoe.

Your default browser opens every web link you click in other apps, from Mail, Slack, Notes and more. Safari is the default until you change it.

Using System Settings

  1. Open the Apple menu → System Settings.
  2. Click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
  3. Scroll to Default web browser and choose your browser from the menu.

Only browsers you've installed appear in the list. Most browsers also offer a “Make default” button in their own settings, which asks macOS to confirm.

Using Defaultify for Mac

  1. Open Defaultify and choose System Roles.
  2. In the Web Browser row, pick your browser from the menu.
  3. Confirm in the macOS dialog.

Pin the row to have Default Guard tell you if a browser update sets itself as the default again.

What else changes

macOS ties http, https, .html and .htm together. Changing your browser also makes saved web pages open in it.
